Аннотация

Medical Latin and English terminological collocations exhibit parallel but non-isomorphic structural patterns. This article analyses the main structural models of multi-word medical terms in Latin—noun + adjective, noun + noun in the genitive, adjective + noun, and noun + prepositional phrase—and compares them with their English counterparts, such as adjective(s) + noun, noun + prepositional phrase, and hybrid Latin–English strings. The analysis focuses on the relative position of the head and its modifiers, the grammatical relations involved (agreement, government, adjacency), and the expression of case and number categories. Drawing on descriptive and corpus-based findings from contemporary medical discourse, including case reports and ESP-oriented studies, the paper demonstrates recurrent structural correspondences such as Latin genitive ↔ English of‑phrase, and Latin postposed adjective ↔ English preposed adjective sequence. It is argued that explicit, contrastive mapping of these patterns provides a robust basis for medical English pedagogy, especially in ESP settings for medical and pharmacy students. The article concludes with methodological recommendations for integrating structural contrasts into corpus-assisted teaching of terminological collocations.
